Queen Mary Futures:

Design, Democracy, and Discourse in Long Beach California

Susan Herrington

"Enormous parking lot".
"Obliterated ecology."
"Unpractical access."
"Decaying relics."

These phrases could describe any number of sites in a world filled with uninspiring places.

When investment in public space could play a key role in address-ing some of the most important challenges of the 21st century, Landscape Architects have a responsibility to their communities to take leadership in advocating for underutilized sites. As design professionals we are well equipped — with tools of graphic communication — and well connected — with community and with leaders — to act as effective catalysts for change.

Set in Long Beach California, Queen Mary Futures recommends a method of practice designed to inspire a community to demand abetter future — through site design — at a dramatic example of a site with unfulfilled potential.
