WATERFRONT PARK EVOLVING WITH THE TIME
Vernacular landscape is always defined as respecting ordinary people’s lives and using local material in designs. Richmond has along history of agriculture, and the agriculture is still an essential part of the industry of the city in suburban areas. There has been increased attention about how to introduce agriculture back to the city where the ordinary people used to practice agriculture.
The design solution is to adopt the city’s strategy of linear park and introduce messiness related with agriculture in urban landscapes.Messiness could be birds droppings, dead branches and leaves, organic-rich and black soil, which agriculture took advantage of to be fertilizers. By displaying the messiness onto our urban landscapes and we run into in our daily lives, we are appreciating the history of the lands and the lifestyles of our ancestors on the land.
Barn swallow is studies as an example of the messiness. Barn swallows can bring a lot of noises, droppings, and messing nests attached to buildings. However, barn swallows prey on harmful insects that could destroy the crops, which made barn swallows once important before the pesticides. Through the design, people will not only embrace the messy and sustainable landscapes but also connect with the birds and pollinator species we used to love again.
